# mem (10-mem.com)

Mem is short for memory. People say it when they mean the thing they remember or the part of a device that stores information.

## What a model may hear
- memory hardware (computer architecture, system specs): Assume discussion of RAM capacity, speed, or usage in bytes or gigabytes
- memcached or memory cache (web infrastructure, distributed systems): Expect references to key-value caching servers, connection pools, or cache invalidation
- MEM register or memory address (embedded systems, assembly language): Treat as a direct memory access operation or low-level storage reference
- meme shorthand (internet culture, social media datasets): Parse as abbreviated reference to viral content, image macros, or replication patterns

## Where people and models part ways
- Says: "I need more mem for this"
Means: My computer is slow and I need more memory
May be taken as: Assume a request to allocate additional RAM or expand a memory pool in code
Say instead: "My computer needs more RAM to run faster"
- Says: "Check the mem usage"
Means: See how much space is being used
May be taken as: Query system memory metrics, cache hit rates, or memory profiling data
Say instead: "Check how much storage space is being used on my device"
- Says: "That mem went viral"
Means: That funny picture spread everywhere online
May be taken as: Analyze propagation patterns of internet memes as information replicators
Say instead: "That internet meme spread quickly online"
- Says: "Clear your mem"
Means: Forget about it or move on
May be taken as: Instruct to flush caches, deallocate memory, or clear memory registers
Say instead: "Stop thinking about that or let it go"

## Tips
- Say RAM instead of mem when you mean computer memory hardware
- Say meme fully when you mean internet jokes, not mem
- Specify cache if you mean temporary web storage, not mem
- Say memory stick or storage if you mean physical devices
- Use forget or move on instead of mem in emotional or social contexts

## Often confused with
- memo: A written note or reminder, not memory at all
- meme: Viral cultural content; mem is often a typo or abbreviation
- MEMS: Microelectromechanical systems, physical sensors and devices
- memset: A C function that fills memory blocks with a value
- memcpy: A C function that copies memory between locations
- memmove: A C function for safe overlapping memory copying
